Filled with flavourful meatballs, mozarella, cheddar, and a tasty marinara sauce, this Meatball Sandwich will be your new go-to!

    Meatball Sandwich

One of the reasons why I love this meatball sandwich is because of it's origin. It's a fusion of Italian and American cuisines, coming together to create an almighty sandwich.

A sandwich I simply love (and something that's great for veggies) is my eggplant parmesan sandwich - a real treat!

How To Make The Juicy Meatballs

I find that the trick to making the best meatballs is adding in some breadcrumbs. They soak up any juices and provide a deeper squelch to your meatball bite.

To make around 15 meatballs, you'll need:

    • A 500g pack of beef mince
    • 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs
    • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon pepper
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes
    Homemade Meatballs

You'll then want to thoroughly combine the mince meat with all of the ingredients in a bowl. Roll out small-ish pieces of the mixture into little balls. Like in the image above.

    For The Simple Marinara Sauce

    A few top tips for a GREAT marinara sauce are;

    1. The longer you leave it to simmer, the tastier it will become
    2. The more garlic, the better
    3. Adding a teaspoon of sugar will elevate the dish to a whole new level

So, now that those little tips are out of the way, here are the ingredients you'll need to sauce up your meatball sandwich:

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 red onion
    • 3 garlic cloves
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 2 teaspoon mixed herbs
    • 1 teaspoon chilli flakes
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon pepper
    • 1 teaspoon sugar

And just like that, you'll have yourself a flavourful sauce!

All you need now is to drizzle over your meatballs, cheese, and parsley!

    Ingredients

    For The Meatballs

    • 500g pack of beef mince
    • 1 tbsp bread crumbs
    • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon pepper
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes

    For The Marinara Sauce

    • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
    • 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 tsp paprika
    • 2 tsp mixed dry herbs
    • 1 teaspoon chilli flakes
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 tsp pepper
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1 tin tomatoes

    Other

    • 1 small baguette, sliced in half
    • ½ tablespoon grated cheddar
    • ½ mozzarella ball
    • 1 teaspoon grated parmesan
    • A little handful of parsley

    Instructions

    For The Marinara Sauce

    • Place a pan on medium heat. Add in some olive oil and transfer in your garlic and onions. Leave to fry for 5 minutes.
    • Add in your herbs and spices. Stir and fry for a further 3 minutes, then add in your tinned tomatoes. Fill up your empty tomato tin with water halfway and then add it to your pan.
    • Bring the mixture up to a boil and then leave to simmer for as long as you'd like. I'd recommend leaving it to cook for a minimum of 15 minutes.

    For The Meatballs

    • Combine all of the meatball ingredients in a large bowl. Mix and knead thoroughly until there are no loose bits of meat.
    • Split the meat mixture into around 15 equal-sized parts. Roll each piece into a round ball. They should be around 1 inch in diameter.
    • Grab a frying pan, place it on medium heat, and then add in a drizzle of oil. Gently place in your meatballs and leave to fry for 4 minutes on each side. You might find it difficult to cook them all the way through. If so, turn your oven on to a 160C fan, place your meatballs onto a tray, and bake them for around 7 extra minutes.
    • Remove your meatballs and set them aside.

    Assembly

    • Preheat your oven to a 160C fan. Prep your grill to be turned on after you use the oven.
    • Slice your small baguette in half horizontally but not all the way through. Place it on a tray and warm up in the oven for 5 minutes at 160C fan.
    • Remove your bread from the oven, open it up, and place down 2 tbsps marinara sauce, 4-7 meatballs, ½ your mozzarella, and ½ your cheddar cheese. Grill for 5 minutes or until your cheese has melted and turned golden. Remove your sandwich and top with parmesan and parsley. Then, serve up and enjoy!
