From what meat goes with pierogi to some of my favourite veggie options, I've provided an array of recipes to help you figure out what to make with perogies.

    Homemade Polish Pierogi

I absolutely love pierogi and will eat them on a weekly basis. These cute little dumplings are great as a snack, but also amazing served as a whole meal with lots of my favourite pierogi side dishes.

If you're a fan of dumplings in general, then you should check out my Cheat Bao recipe or my Chicken & Prawn dumplings.

If you want some quick suggestions, here are a few of my top suggestions:

The best meat side dishes to serve with pierogi: easy baked chicken with cream of chicken, stuffed salmon, chicken salad, kielbasa sandwich, and slow cooker gammon.

The best vegetable side dishes to eat with pierogi: pea and asparagus orzo, cavolo nero with lemon and garlic, and ratatouille.

A few of my favourite random pierogi side dishes: cheesy 'nduja slider, fried greens, vegetable soup, or beetroot pasta.

    • What To Serve with Perogies: 20 BEST Pierogi Side Dishes

    What are perogies?

Perogies or pierogi (the plural Eastern European spelling), are some of the tastiest (but humble) dumplings out there. They're typically filled with mashed potato, fried onions, sauerkraut, spinach, mushrooms, meat, or bacon. I grew up in Poland and my parents always tell me about the little cafe around the corner that sold some really good potato and fried onion ones topped with sour cream, bacon, and dill.

    How are perogies traditionally served?

Traditionally pierogi are served with simple yet delicious toppings. Sour cream, chives, dill, fried onions, bacon, or melted butter are all common ingredients. They can be traditionally served alongside a classic stew or Borscht (a sour soup made with beetroots, meat stock, and veggies).

    Meat Sides

Baked Chicken with Cream of Chicken Soup

This is a super quick cheesy baked chicken with cream of chicken soup and is great as a chicken option to serve with pierogi. It has some broccoli florets in the sauce too, so extra veg! It compliments the flavours of pierogi really well.

Stuffed Salmon in Air Fryer (10 Minutes)

This air fryer stuffed salmon recipe is so simple, delicious, and takes just 10 minutes to cook in the air fryer. It's stuffed with a ricotta, spinach, and harissa filling that melts in your mouth. So, if you're looking for some fish to serve with pierogi, then this is a great option!

    Greek Yogurt Chicken (Air Fryer)

Savory perogies would be a delicious accompaniment to this juicy Greek yogurt chicken. Top with sour cream, tzatziki, or green herbs and you've got yourself a delicious meal.

    Chicken Salad

If you're serving pierogi with sour cream and some fresh dill, then this healthy chicken salad will be a great dish to serve with them. It's super quick to put together and pairs really well with savoury perogies.

    Kielbasa Sandwich

It might take you by surprise, but dumplings and sandwiches go SO well together. This Kielbasa sandwich (which is a smoked Polish sausage and homemade bbq sauce) pairs so well with savoury pierogi as a great snack or side dish.

    Slow Cooker Gammon

This slow cooker gammon that's been honey roasted is delicious! Tasty moist slices of ham that will go perfectly alongside your sauerkraut, mushroom, cheese and potato perogies (or whatever filling you use).

    Tender Braising Steak with Gravy

Savory perogies would be a delicious accompaniment to this tender braising steak. Top with the optional gravy and enjoy!

    Vegetable Sides

    Pea & Asparagus Orzo

Vegetables go so well with any kind of pierogi whether they're filled with meat or veggies. This pea and asparagus orzo takes less than 20 minutes to make and pairs really well with a plate of fresh perogies.

    Asparagus and Goats Cheese Pasta

A vegetable that compliments pierogi is asparagus. Although I've made this dish with orzo, you can use any pasta shape you like. I've also topped it with goats cheese which would go really well with pierogi for extra flavour.

Cavolo Nero with Garlic & Lemon

If you've got quite a big portion of pirogi and you're looking for vegetables that go with perogies, then this cavolo nero dish is a great option. It's easy to make, light, and great for a bit of veggie colour and nutrition.

    Roasted Tenderstem Broccoli

If you're wondering what to eat with pierogi that provides a bit of green and crunch, these parmesan roasted tenderstem broccoli served with lemon are a great side dish to any savoury pierogi recipe.

    Green Goddess Salad

A lot of pirogi toppings are uncooked or cold, so it can be really delicious to serve them with a salad, like this green goddess inspired one.

    Ratatouille

If you're having pierogies for dinner, then this ratatouille bake is for you. It goes really well with perogies because it provides a tomato based vegetable casserole. You can eat it with meat or vegetable dumplings.

    My Favourite Pierogi Side Dishes

    Loaded Mashed Potato Bowl

A wholesome and comforting dish to all, loaded mashed potato is such a great dish to serve alongside various European dumplings. Make your mashed potato with lots of butter, milk, salt, and pepper, then top it with ingredients that match the dumplings you're eating it with. I love topping mine with fried leeks, bacon, and sour cream, but let your imagination run wild and go for whatever you fancy!

    Cheesy 'Nduja Slider

There's nothing quite like a big slab of gorgeous bread, topped with cheesy, spicy sausage. This is one of my favourite side dishes for anything, but it works really well with perogies. It adds a bit of spice, bit of colour, and an extra portion of carb to fill you up.

    Fried Greens

You can never go wrong with a plate full of fried greens. For European style dumplings, I love to fry some green beans in garlic and olive oil. With a dash of pepper and salt, they're the perfect side dish. They add a bit of crunch, bit of colour, and a lovely flavoursome bite.

    Vegetable Soup

If it's a cold day, and you want something warming to serve alongside your pierogi dumplings, a smooth and creamy vegetable soup could be the perfect side. Making soup is really simple and a great way to use up any leftover veg in your fridge. Begin by frying some onions and garlic in a large saucepan followed by any other extra veg like carrots, broccoli, potatoes, or cauliflower. Fry for a few minutes and then pour in some chicken or veg stock to cover the veggies. Leave to simmer for 20 minutes or until the veggies are all soft. Blend them up with a hand blender, then add in some milk to make the soup less viscous. Enjoy!

    Pink Beetroot Pasta

Made with beetroot, garlic, and feta cheese, this Pink Pasta is honestly so delicious. Brimmed to the rim with flavour and colour, it goes so well with a load of tasty dumplings. You could also just make the sauce and serve it as a dipping sauce for the pierogi!

    Garlic Confit Orzo

For all of the garlic girls and guys out there, this Garlic & Chilli Confit Orzo is for you! It's simple to make and has a delicate flavour palette to it, to balance well with whatever pierogi filling choice you've gone for.

    20-Best-Substitutes-For-Orzo.

    Roasted Vegetables

From roast potatoes to brussels sprouts, there's nothing better than a platter of gorgeously roasted vegetables. Get a load of veggies, place them on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, pepper, salt, oregano, rosemary, and bake in the oven for 40 minutes at 160C/320F fan.

    Pierogi FAQs

What are good dipping sauces for pierogi?

I love sour cream, a creamy homemade sauce, or tomato chilli sauce for savoury pierogi. For sweet versions, any kind of fruit sauce, yoghurt, honey or jam work great.

    How are perogies traditionally served?

They will either be served as a whole meal, or with a side of stew and or Borscht (a soup made with beetroot, meat stock, and vegetables) .

What toppings can go with perogies?

You can have an array of toppings from sour cream, bacon, dill, fried onions, to melted butter.

How many pierogi are in a serving?

If you're serving it as a whole meal, then between 8-10 dumplings per person would suffice. If it's a side dish, being served with other recipes, then between 3-6.
