This easy Harissa Aioli only requires 4 ingredients and is such a delicious homemade condiment. I hope you love it!

Harissa is a wonderful North African chili paste that pairs perfectly with aioli. The spice and subtle sweetness of harissa adds to the creamy zinginess of the aioli, creating the ultimate condiment that I love to serve with homemade fries, bbq, or a sandwich.

My homemade kewpie mayonnaise is another one of my favourite condiments, as well as my homemade Vietnamese chili oil which I think you'll love!

Why I Love This Recipe (and why you will too!)

Simple: you only need mayonnaise, good quality harissa paste, lemon, and garlic for this harissa aioli recipe.

Versatile: this recipe goes so well with a number of dishes. You can serve it alongside bbq's, any kind of potato, as a sandwich condiment spread, or in a salad dressing (simply combine with olive oil).

Customisable: you can make this sauce your own by adding in more or less lemon, harissa, or garlic. We're also using standard regular ingredients for this, but to make this vegan, simply use vegan mayonnaise. You could also add in some finely chopped parsley for some extra greenery and freshness if you fancied!

    Ingredients and Substitutions

    Ingredients for harissa aioli.

Mayonnaise: we're using good quality mayonnaise here...by good quality, just use one that you love the flavour of and regularly have in your fridge! Feel free to use vegan mayonnaise too!

Harissa: this is a North African chili paste and it's absolutely delicious! I'd highly recommend buying some rose harissa from your local foreign supermarket to get the most authentic product possible. But if you can't, then I love using Belazu rose harissa. If you can't find any harissa, you could substitute it out for sriracha, gochujang, or ½ tablespoon tomato paste combined with ½ fresh red chili (finely chopped).

Lemon: a fresh lemon is best for this recipe. If you've only got store-bought lemon juice, then use that.

Garlic: we're using fresh garlic cloves for the best flavour. If you've only got garlic powder or granules, use ¼ teaspoon.

The full list of ingredients and quantities is at the bottom of this blog in the recipe card!

    FAQs

What's the difference between rose harissa paste and harissa paste?

Traditional harissa is made using a combination of chillies, roasted red peppers, garlic, and spices. Rose harissa is simply a paste that has the addition of rose petals or rosewater in it which compliments the traditional harissa ingredients. You can use either for this recipe!

    Is this vegan?

It is if you use vegan mayonnaise!

    Is harissa aioli gluten-free?

Yes! Just make sure to check the mayonnaise and the harissa ingredients list before creating the condiment to double check!

What can I serve harissa aioli with?

French fries, BBQ dishes, as a condiment in a sandwich, or on toast with eggs!
